Procedures - Breast Augmentation & Breast Lifts

Over the past generation, plastic surgeons have developed and refined breast implants and the techniques for augmentation. Women with small breasts, post-pregnancy loss of breast volume and breast deformities have benefited from surgical breast enhancement. They have acquired an improved self-image and a more proportional figure.

We are able to use both saline implants and the new Cohesive Gel silicone gel implants in our Breast Augmentation patients. The choice is up to you. Dr. Coffey will explain the pros and cons of both choices so you feel comfortable picking one. Dr. Coffey can and does perform both "Over the muscle" and "Under the muscle" techniques. There are very specific reasons to choose one or the other. Just as each woman is different, each implant procedure needs to be individualized for her breast size and her wants. Dr. Coffey will explain to you what he recommends in your particular case and why.

Breast lift, or mastopexy, is the surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts.

There are any number of causes for breast sagging: Pregnancy and/or breastfeeding is probably the most common. There is also aging, weight loss or possibly, surgery to remove a tumor. What all of these have in common is too much skin for the amount of breast tissue.

The best way to think about a mastopexy or breast lift, is to think of your skin just as a wrapper for the breast and nipple. Your nipples are breast tissue---the part that sticks out for your baby to nurse. They aren't skin. So we loosen the skin from around the breast and nipple, remove the excess, and re-wrap the skin to form a nice youthful shape.

Sometimes after weight loss or after pregnancy your breast tissue actually becomes smaller than it was before. In cases where you want a larger breast in addition to a lifted breast, we can put in an implant at the same time. This creates probably the best of all cases: a nice firm, well-shaped breast larger than it was before.

We probably do more combination procedures of breast lift and implant than breast lifting alone, because the outcome is so much nicer. If you have a breast lift only, your breast will look smaller (to you) because there isn't as much skin there to see. We don't actually remove breast tissue, but it looks like it.

In your initial consultation Dr. Coffey will take the time necessary to answer any questions you might have toward realizing your particular goals for your "new look". Upon scheduling your surgery, you will be given pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
